Before this weekend's snow storm came through, the RCL and State Cup action got back into full swing for Spokane Sounders sides in January. Here's a quick round-up of how the teams have done thus far in their competitions, including a visit to the PacNW Winter Classic mid-January.
In tournament play, high school boys and girls teams have been successful of late. Six of the seven boys teams in State Cup and President's Cup action advanced to the quarterfinals. At the PacNW Winter Classic, six teams advanced to the semifinals with two of them moving onto the championship game.
The ladies opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw at Eastside FC in December before a lengthy break through mid-January. When they returned to action in the Division 1 U19 league, they posted a 3-0 victory at home against FWFC. They closed out the month on the road with a 3-1 loss at Eastside and a 2-0 win at PacNW.
The team opened things up on the road with a 2-1 loss at WPFC but came home the following weekend and dominated Three Rivers to the tune of a 5-0 win to close out the month. At the PacNW Winter Classic the ladies were 0-3-0.
Sounders G00-A / Sounders G00-B / Sounders G00-C
Unlike their peers, the A squad has been quite busy since the season kicked off in December, playing seven Division 1 games in December and January - nearly all of them on the road. It started with a split decision on the road the opening weekend with a loss at Seattle United before a victory at Eastside FC. The following weekend saw a repeat with a loss at PacNW before victory against Crossfire Premier. When they returned to play in January, they played to a draw at Washington Rush before losing to GS Surf. They wrapped up the month at home with a loss to Washington Rush. The Sounders B & C squads are doing well in Division 3. The B side is perfect through three games, tallying four goals in each. They opened with a 4-1 win against the Spokane Sounders counterparts and then posted 4-1 and 4-2 wins on the road against Crossfire Premier and PacNW. The C squad dropped the match to their clubmates after falling at home to Crossfire Premier the day before, but rebounded the following week to close out the month with a victory, 1-0, over Washington Rush. At the PacNW Winter Classic, the A squad won Group B with a 3-0-0 record and advanced to the final with a 3-1 win over Harbor Premier before falling 1-0 to WFC Rangers in the championship.The B squad also advanced out of their group as a wild card, but fell 1-0 to Cascade FC in the semifinals.
Sounders G01-A / Sounders G01-B / Sounders G01-C
The A squad is off to a hot start with an unbeaten run without allowing a goal through six games - all on the road - before picking up another win in their home opener in Division 1. In December they kicked things off with a scoreless draw at Seattle United and 1-0 win against Eastside FC opening weekend. The next week they blanked PacNW and Crossfire Premier 2-0 and 3-0, respectively. When they returned to action in January they topped Washington Rush 2-0 and dueled to a 0-0 draw at WPFC before finishing the month off with a 4-1 home win against Washington Rush. The B side dropped a narrow 3-2 decision in their Division 3 opener at home to Blackhills in December, but won their first two games in January on the road with 1-0 and 4-1 wins at Northwest United and WPFC, respectively. It's been a tough start in Division 4 for the C squad. They dropped both games at Snohomish United and Whatcom in mid-January on their opening weekend and then split at home the next two weeks, playing FWFC to a draw and falling in a tight 2-1 affair against Blackhills to wrap January up. At the PacNW Winter Classic, the A squad were perfect in group play before falling to host PacNW, 2-1, in the semifinals. The B team also reached the final four, going 2-0-1 in group play before suffering a 2-0 loss to Blackhills FC.
Sounders G02-A / Sounders G02-B / Sounders G02-C
In a series of close contests on the road in Division 1, the A squad is still searching for its first win but recorded draws both weekends. They played to a scoreless tie at Seattle United before falling 2-1 to Eastside FC on their opening weekend of play. A week later they wrapped up January action with a 2-2 draw at Washington Rush and a 1-0 loss to GS Surf. The B side, meanwhile, was blanked in two defeats on the road on their opening and only weekend of play thus far by RVS and Northwest United in Division 3. The C side is also winless in Division 4 with four losses - two in December and two in January. At the PacNW Winter Classic, the A squad reached the championship only to come up short in penalties after a 1-1 draw against Eastside FC. They were 3-0-0 in group play and topped host PacNW 3-1 in the semifinal. The B team also advanced from group play, going 2-0-1. They were knocked out by Kitsap Alliance in the semifinals in a 1-0 decision.
Sounders G03-A / Sounders G03-B
The A squad split their opening weekend of Winter League Division 2 play with a 2-0 win at Seattle United and a 3-1 loss to WPFC. The B squad kicks off their season in Division 4 the opening weekend of February.
Sounders G04-A / Sounders G04-B
Both sides were to begin play in the Winter League Divisions 2 and 3 the opening weekend of February.
Sounders B03-A / Sounders B03-B
In their first game of the U14 Winter League, The A squad fell 2-0 versus Seattle United on January 21 in Division 2. Meanwhile, the B side got off to a great start in Division 4 with a pair of road wins that same weekend, topping RVS and STU Chelsea Academy 2-1 and 1-0, respectively.
Sounders B04-A / Sounders B04-B
On their opening weekend of Winter League U13 Division 1 play, the A squad split a pair of 1-0 decisions on the road with a loss at Seattle United and a win against WPFC. In another 1-0 result, the B side dropped their opener at Whatcom in Division 4 to open the season.
CUP: Sounders B98-A / Sounders B98-B
The A squad came out on the wrong side of three tight contests in State Cup group play. After a scoreless draw at WPFC, they fell 3-2 at Crossfire Premier the next day. They wrapped up their group play with a 2-1 loss to Blackhills. The B side, meanwhile, advanced to the President's Cup Quarterfinals with 3-0 victories against NorthWest United and Crossfire Premier along with a 2-0 win against Harbor Premier. At the PacNW Winter Classic the B98/99 side went 1-1-1, finishing third in their group.
CUP: Sounders B00-A
The boys were eliminated from the U17 State Cup bracket after three defeats in group play, falling back-to-back on the road to Crossfire Premier and GS Surf along with a loss at home to Eastside FC.
CUP: Sounders B01-A / Sounders B01-B
The A squad fell 2-0 at Seattle United in their U16 State Cup opener and then had no fortune in the next two outings, battling to a scoreless draw at GS Surf the next day and another 0-0 tie at home a week later against Washington Timbers. The B side, however, advanced to the President's Cup Division 2 Quarterfinals, rebounding from a 2-0 Blackhills loss with a 2-0 win against Eastside to earn the second spot out of the three-team group.
CUP: Sounders B02-A / Sounders B02-B
A pair of draws was enough to send the A squad through to the State Cup U15 Quarterfinals as the second team from their group. They played to a 1-1 draw at home versus Snohomish and then battled Crossfire Premier to a scoreless stalemate on the road the next day. The B side came up just short of advancing in the Division 1 President's Cup. After a 2-0 loss at STU Chelsea, they played Washington Timbers to a 0-0 road draw the following day. A week later, though, they fell on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision against Three Rivers at home.
