Shadow Women’s First Team, Shadow 2 kick off NWPL, EPLWA seasons

After two weeks of State & President's Cup tournaments and 2017-18 tryouts for Spokane SC Shadow / Sounders, the Shadow First Teams kick off the new year for the club with their Season Openers this weekend on the road.

The reigning Northwest Premier League champion Women's First Team headlines a two-game trip to face the Olympic Force and Washington Premier Sound Sound Saturday and Sunday. They are joined by men's side Spokane Shadow 2, which will continue the club's presence in the Evergreen Premier League as the Men's First Team makes the move to the National Premier Soccer League.

Highlighting the roster for the Shadow WFT as they open their second season is Gonzaga's Callie Best and the returning duo of Jael Hagerott and Marissa Mykines. Additional players from the championship squad will return to the roster in the coming weeks, but experienced players helping lead the group on opening weekend also includes local products Jaimey Etten and Tiara Pajimola. After graduating from Mead, Etten attended UNC-Greensboro and later played in the USL W-League with the storied Charlotte Lady Eagles. Pajimola graduated a year ago from Whitworth University, where the Shadle product was the star striker for the Pirates throughout her career.

A high percentage of the squad for the opening game is comprised of many of the very players that just finished their club campaigns with successful campaigns in the Washington Youth Soccer State Cup championship tournaments. Chief among those players are Alabama-bound goalkeeper AJ Crooks, who spent time at the U15 US National Team camp this year and helped the club claim the U16 State Cup title last Sunday at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila. Joining Crooks on the squad are several other standout youth players from the area, including GSL co-Defender of the Year Mia Padon, First Team selection Darby Doyle, Kaelyn Barnes, Inland Empire League All-League selection Maddie Haas, and Northeast A League MVP Emmy Moore.

Shadow 2 make their debut in EPLWA with a similarly youth-laden roster for the opening weekend as college players continue to report for the NPSL and EPLWA teams. The team will be guided by head coach Mike Pellicio, the club's Director of Coaching. On the field this weekend First Team veteran Jesse Retan will be charged with leading the youthful squad against the Force and rival Shock alongside recent staff addition Berrick Rastok, the Director of the club's Sounders Homegrown Program. The former San Diego State product played with several NPSL clubs in California and had a brief career professionally in Southern California before injury sidelined the former member of the San Diego Surf coaching staff.

The squad features several players from CC Spokane, where new Men's First Team head coach Cameron Bushey is an assistant, and several recent high school standouts that are returning from area colleges, including Northwest Conference Freshman of the Year Jackson Moore, who had an outstanding debut as a defender at Pacific Lutheran. Highlighting the youth players in the squad are Cameron Weller and Sterling Eaglin, who were on the Region IV Olympic Development Team for the USYS Interregionals in Florida last December. Weller was honored as one of 23 All-Stars around the nation at the event for the 2001 age group.
