Regionals Update: G03 Reach Presidents Semis; G01 Open FWR Play

The end of the school year gave way this week to Region IV championship tournaments with a pair of Spokane Sounders sides in action at Regionals. The G03 ladies recently participated in the Region IV Presidents Cup tournament in Salt Lake City, and the G01 State Champion Sounders are currently playing in the Far West Regionals in Seattle.

U14 Region IV Presidents Cup - G01A Sounders

The Sounders ladies opened the tournament June 13 with a big 4-0 victory against JH United of Wyoming. The following day they played to a 1-1 draw against Players Elite of Nevada.

They wrapped up group play with another stalemate, finishing in a scoreless draw with Real Colorado Olympico that left them in a three-way tie atop Group D at 1-0-2. The Shadow were number one on the tiebreaker, setting them up for a quarterfinal showdown with the second-place side of Group A, which turned out to be Washington Premier.

The Evergreen State showdown was a dramatic affair, going scoreless all the way through the final seconds of overtime before Zoe Crockett found the back of the net with about 15 seconds remaining before penalties would have been called upon to determine the semifinalist. The tournament, however, came to a close on Saturday in a 2-0 loss to Eagles SC of Cal South, which went on to win the tournament with a 2-1 victory against Players Elite.

U16 Far West Regionals - G03A Sounders

With a loaded group in their tournament slate, the G03 ladies used plenty of resources to prepare for their challenge, training on a regular basis alongside and with the Shadow Women's First Team as well as playing a friendly with nearby G00 Sting Timbers, who are playing in the U17 bracket.

The work looks to have paid early dividends. Facing a highly-ranked side that is the defending champions of the event from last year, Spokane posted a 2-1 victory against USA Stars Academy of Cal-North on the opening day of the championship.

Megan Robertson found Olivia DeShazo 11 minutes in for the opening tally and with the score level in the second half, Chelse Le fed Kylie Keller for the game-winner in the 51st.
