Shadow Dominate in 5-0 Win Over Kitsap

Shadow News Release - Saturday, June 9, 2018

Eighteen-year-old Jake Levine lit up the visiting Kitsap Pumas in a three-goal performance that was nearly more as he helped lead the Spokane Shadow First Team to a 5-0 National Premier Soccer League victory at the Spokane Shadow Complex Saturday afternoon. The Shadow U23s, despite another quality performance, dropped a close 2-1 Evergreen Premier League contest to Yakima United.

The onslaught against Kitsap started early as the Shadow scored two quick goals in the opening eight minutes and continued to pepper former Shadow youth product Cody Lang, who was besieged on the day.

Levine scored his first just four minutes after the opening whistle when Mike Ramos swung a ball into the box, finding the head of the Shadow youth alum. Levine nodded it across the goal and into the side netting just out of the Lang's reach. Four minutes later a pair of defenders put the squad up two. Noah Chapleski connected on a cross wide from the left with JD Michael, who collected on the right side and quickly fired home.

A corner kick from Jesse Retan a minute before the break made the lead three for the intermission. The perfect service was headed in again by Levine into the top left of the goal. He finished the hat-trick nine minutes into the second half when Ramos slipped him in behind the defense. The Northwest Nazarene freshman took a touch at the top of the box and then placed a low shot with pace into the bottom right of the goal.

Levine, who started the season with the Shadow U23 and earned a spot with the First Team with a pair of goals early in the EPLWA campaign, now has five goals in four games with the First Team.

Chase Reidt, who scored four goals in the first three games before going without on the two-game trip last week, capped the contest with a strike in the 78th via Eric Espinoza.

Bryan Hernandez also finished with his third consecutive shutout.

In the second game of the doubleheader the visiting Hoppers grabbed the lead just under a half-hour into the match when a turnover at midfield on a ball from keeper Carter Auth was collected by Alonzo Rojos and launched onto the empty goal. Auth attempted to recover, but the shot was over his reach. Four minutes later Yakima United doubled the advantage when Jose Maldonado finished off a ball from Muhammed Marenah in the 31st minute.

Despite a multitude of tantalizing chances throughout the contest, including a pair off the woodwork, the Shadow U23s were unable to find the twine as the First Team had in the preceding match. A rebound opportunity in the 89th minute finished by Drew Williams gave the hosts a spark of hope with just minutes remaining, but a couple more looks were also just off the mark.
