The Spokane Shadow Men’s First Team host their first-ever National Premier Soccer League home match this Sunday. The home opener at Spokane Falls CC Stadium is against current league-leader PDX FC (2-0-0) of Portland kicks off at 2:00. Meanwhile, the Shadow Women's First Team is embarking on its final road trip and Shadow 2 are on a two-game trek.
A trio of Whitworth players were key in the result on the road last week in Bonney Lake against Pierce County in a 2-1 victory to move second in the league. Spencer Wolfe, the team captain, found fellow Pirate Kyle Morris 20 minutes into the first half on a fantastic free kick for the go-ahead goal. Eric Espinoza pushed the lead to two in the 63rd minute on an excellent team effort. The ball was played around the penalty area before Spokane Shadow youth product Chase Reidt (CC Spokane) connected with Espinoza for what proved to be the winner. The hosts scored late in the match to cut the lead to 2-1, but the goal came seconds before the final whistle sounded.
The late home opener comes after three of its five road games have already been completed. The team has earned points in each of those, going 1-0-2.
"We take each game one game at a time," head coach Cameron Bushey said of the early season results. "We have had three solid games, and now we get to play a fourth. The past few weeks have been about getting basic team principles right.
"This week has been about getting the job done right inside of those principles. This weekend we get to show our work at home. We're looking forward to that. The guys are ready and they're looking forward to playing at home. PDX is on top of the table right now, so we're looking forward to the competition."
Joining the squad this week are a trio of players from three different schools. Local Shadow products Colin Shockman (Whitworth) and JD Hauenstein (MSU-Billings) return to the squad for another season while Denis Kalamar (Gonzaga) is new to the club.
Four different players have scored for the Shadow thus far with Jesse Retan tallying the equalizer in the 1-1 season opener at Kitsap and Dana Kowachek scoring a crucial 90th minute equalizer in the second match at OSA in a 1-1 tie.
Bryan Hernandez has played in goal for all three games thus far and is slated to start again Sunday. The Humboldt State keeper grew up playing in the most prestigious Cal South League and participated in the Cal South ODP program. Hernandez played for the Pateadores Academy in the USSF Development Academy and won a national title, beating FC Dallas in the finals. In addition, he has been called up to the El Salvador U23 National Team and has had a trial at Professional Club Pachuca FC in Mexico. His goalkeeping education includes tutelage from Thomas Dooley (Former USA World Cup player, USA National Team Assistant Coach, and currently Philippines Head Coach,) and Todd Saldana (Former UCLA coach, and current MLS LAFC Academy Director).

While the Shadow First Team is at home, the Shadow Women's First Team and Shadow 2 men will be on the road. Both will host their home openers the following week.
After having last week off for the holiday, the ladies will hop in the vans for the final time in regular season play with a Sunday trip to Wenatchee to play league newcomer NCW Alliance at 5:00 at the Apple Bowl. The unbeaten Shadow (4-0-0) will have a chance to pull even with league-leading Seattle Stars (5-0-0), who are idle this week and visit Spokane the following week.
The group hitting the road this week is quite different from the one that played twice two weeks ago, but with a lot of extremely talented players in the pool, there is no drop-off in expectations for the performance. After suffering an injury in the opener, Shadow youth product Kaelyn Barnes returns to the mix and is joined by a few new faces in Samantha Heilman, Bridget Rieken and Melissa Symmes. Also back on the squad is Larkin Russell, Riley Martinson and defender Maia Angell, a Shadow youth product who was one of the team's leading scorers a year ago
One of the Women's First Team's three keepers, AJ Crooks, is out of the mix for the weekend as she currently attending the US Women's National Team camp in California this week.
