SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE - Friday, May 29, 2015
A longtime rivalry with Yakima continues Saturday night when the Spokane Shadow (1-1-1) play host to the visiting Hoppers at Spokane Falls CC Stadium at 7:00 pm. The match is part of SYSA Night in which kids, many of whom are playing in the annual Wendle Tournament this weekend at Andrew Rypien Field, that are wearing their Spokane Youth Sports Association jersey get in free.
The Shadow are returning to action after having the previous weekend off. The match is the third consecutive home contest for the club, which opened the season with a win on the road only to come home and play to a draw and suffer a defeat at the hands of current league-leader Vancouver two weeks ago in their last outing.
With college commitments winding down, the roster is beginning to shift to a regular group of players. Among the new players in the pool is former Hawaii Pacific University striker Chance Bukoski. The NCAA Division II PacWest Player of the Year as a senior in 2011, will join local product Karl Muelheims in the attack.
The club has spent much of the past two weeks working on its cohesiveness on the field and is looking to make Saturday evening a starting point for the defending Evergreen Premier League champions. After a slow start in their first two home games last year, the team went unbeaten the rest of the campaign.
About the Opposition: Yakima United (2-2-1)
A year ago the Hoppers upended the Shadow with a comeback from a two-goal deficit in Spokane's second match of the season. Devin Leon scored seven minutes in and Mike Ramos pushed the lead to two in the 26th before the visitors made their rally. Hector Valdovinos cut into the hole in the 35th on a ball from Cesar Rodriguez, who scored himself two minutes later to knot things up. Rodriguez went on to create the surprising winner in the 90th minute from Junior Garcia that gave Yakima a 3-2 win. It was the Shadow's last loss of the season as they went unbeaten the rest of the way en route to the league title. Within that run, the Shadow snared a narrow 1-0 road win in Yakima with Adam Talley scoring in the 90th minute on a ball from Ramos.
This year, Yakima comes into the match in third place in the league, having completed a season sweep of last place Bellingham last week with a 4-0 win in which Jesse Esquivel tallied a hat-trick and Valdovinos had a goal and assist. Esquivel leads the league with six goals. It will be a tough contest for the Hoppers, though, as they will have played Olympic Force the night before in Yakima.
The match is not the first trip to Spokane for Yakima this spring. They visited the Lilac City March 28 for a preseason tune-up against Gonzaga University, which featured several current and former Shadow players. The Bulldogs prevailed 3-1 in the match.
Coming Up – Road Trip – June 6 & 7
The Shadow will embark on their first two-game trip of the season next weekend. They open things up Saturday afternoon against South Sound, which is currently unbeaten and second in the league. Then on Sunday they visit league newcomer Olympic Force in Bremerton.
