SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE -- Friday, May 30, 2014
Unbeaten on the road in their last three games, the Shadow (2-2-1) return home Saturday night to play host to WestSound FC (currently 1-3-1) Saturday night at Spokane Falls CC Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 with family-friendly tailgating starting at 5:00. Kids wearing their Spokane Youth Sports Association soccer jersey will get in free to the game on SYSA Night Saturday.
The Shadow will be looking to post their first home victory by concluding a potential season sweep of the visitors, whom they defeated 3-0 two weeks ago for the Shadow’s first-ever victory in the Evergreen Premier League (EPLWA). On May 17 the Shadow went held a 1-0 lead after the first half courtesy of a goal from Adam Talley in the first half set up by Nick Hamer. In the second half Mike Ramos set up Elliot Fauske in the 66th and scored off a ball from Sam Engle in the 73rd.
Ramos, on the heels of the league’s first-ever hat-trick last week in a 3-2 road win at Wenatchee, is currently tied for the league lead in scoring with a pair of Yakima United players (Hector Valdovinos and Junior Garcia). He has five goals.
“Obviously they are a team that has gotten points off of Bellingham each time so we got to make sure that we are sharp and tuned in,” head coach Chad Brown said of this week’s opponent, who played the league-leaders to a draw last week. “I think training has gone well; we have progressed as a group over the course from the preseason to now. Guys are coming and training, and for the most part we’ve got our entire group here minus a couple guys that are still finishing school.”
“The training sessions are going well and decisions for me are becoming harder and harder because we have a pool with a lot of guys that are quality,” Brown said, noting that the quality has also made them enjoyable. “We are working towards obviously improving every day and focusing on the process. Hopefully we can pay attention to all the details and the little things and get things done.”
About the Opposition: WestSound FC
WestSound will be coming into the match having played the night before in Yakima. Since the Shadow won the first meeting, WestSound has played only once, surprising visiting Bellingham United again last Sunday with a 1-1 draw. All four of WestSound’s points in the table have come against league-leading Bellingham, who would otherwise be perfect on the year. A good outing by goalkeeper Jordan Hadden, who earned the shutout in the 1-0 win in the previous Bellingham meeting, kept WestSound in the scoreless game through 70 minutes before allowing Bellingham a go-ahead goal. But a netminding error at the other end allowed the hosts to tie it up late via Izzy De Luna.
The EPLWA side is the extension of the youth club by the same name. The team was first formed a year ago, playing a few friendlies. The majority of the players on the roster have played at Olympic College (NWAACC) with a few having experience at Pacific Lutheran (DIII) and MSU-Billings (DII).
The Spokane Shadow are on the road again for two weeks, travelling to Seattle June 7 and Bellingham June 15 before returning home to host South Sound on June 21. Game time for the next home game is 7:00.

EPLWA This Week
Around the league: South Sound remains the lone unbeaten side, beating fellow early contender Vancouver 4-1 last week to pull even on points with Bellingham as they slipped up. It was a good week for teams facing Yakima as Seattle earned their first point with a 2-2 draw and pointless Wenatchee rebounded from their loss to the Shadow with a win against Yakima in their first positive result.
This week, Bellingham plays twice, including a showdown with South Sound on Sunday. Bellingham’s game Saturday against Vancouver will give the Hammers an opportunity to sweep the Victory on the season.
The Shadow are once again atop the league attendance chart with Wenatchee now having hosted multiple games and dropping from the top… There were 20 goals and no shutouts in five games last week, raising the league’s average to 3.76 goals per game. There have only been seven shutouts in 21 games… Road teams continue play well with a favorable record at 10-8-3 after a 1-2-2 performance last weekend. Standings & Stat Leaders [+]
